Running for a Cause with Homestead

On May 16, a group of employees from Homestead Funding participated in the CDPHP Workforce Team Challenge. We’ve been attending the event for nearly 30 years. As the largest running event in the Capital District of New York, the Workforce Team Challenge occurs every year within the Empire State Plaza.

Organized by the Hudson-Mohawk Road Runners Club (HMRRC), the race is a major fundraising event for the club and other nonprofit resource groups around the region. HMRRC issues annual scholarships for student athletes, grants to benefit running-related organizations, free races for members, and the Just Run® program, which encourages grade school children to run for exercise and fun.

Each year, HMRRC and CDPHP select at least one local charity to receive a donation from CDPHP and direct contributions from race participants. This year’s event raised nearly $20,000 for Wizard’s Wardrobe and Reeling for Recovery.

Wizard’s Wardrobe is a free afterschool one-on-one literacy tutoring program for elementary school children in Albany’s South End neighborhood. Through tutoring, students strengthen their reading, writing, and problem-solving skills. 96% of all student participants leave the program at a higher reading level.

Reeling for Recovery provides direct services to at-risk youth through student assistance counseling and summer camp programs. They use adventure-based learning and fishing experiences for youth struggling with behavioral, social, and addiction issues in the Adirondacks and the Capital Region.
